PREY by Graham Masterton
Graham Masterton is the legendary UK horror master of atmosphere and chills. Prey is rightly regarded as one of his best, and make no doubt about it, he sure delivers. Long out of print, we can thank the guys and girls at Leisure Books for bringing this classic to the US, and providing us with an easy-to-find edition.
After a rocky divorce, David Williams decides he needs a break. Low on money, he takes a job restoring Fortyfoot House, a crumbling 19th-century orphanage. Being out of the rush and bustle of city life, David hopes to find peace of mind and to mend some bridges with his son Danny, who also comes along for a holiday.
But the peace and quiet doesn't last long...
Because Fortyfoot House is more than it seems. There's screams at night, rustling in the walls, lights and noises from the attic. Even during the day, Fortyfoot House is unsettling, with it's strangely angled roof and surrounding areas that just don't seem right. Even on the first day in which David and Danny arrive, strange people are spotted and bizarre things happen. And just what is that thing in the attic? Could it really be a rat?
When Liz arrives, a young woman desperately searching for a place to stay, the three of them must battle Fortyfoot House, not only for their lives, but for the lives of human beings past, present and future.
Fortyfoot House isn't just a house with a history - it's a house with a present and future too. Because up in the attic is a doorway that will lead the main characters to the secrets of Fortyfoot House. Unfortunately for David, Danny and Liz, the doorway will also let the secrets out into their world.
And that's when the killing begins...
Masterton doesn't hold back with this one! Prey is a terrific horror novel that has H.P. Lovecraft overtones and takes the reader on a ride they will never forget. The atmosphere of the house itself is stunning, you can almost feel the evil and the horror on every page. David, Danny and Liz are well-crafted characters that the reader will feel for, and even the more incidental characters are well defined.
The scope of PREY may have daunted other writers, as the story takes place over many centuries in the past, present and the future. But Masterton handles it as a true master and leaves our heads spinning with time and space anomalies that make the plot even more startling.
Don't walk....run to buy a copy now. It's a classic.
