THE HALLOWEEN MAN by Douglas Clegg
The Halloween Man is a hard book to summarize. The plot of the novel is very complex indeed and makes quick reviews difficult to write. But don't let that stop you picking up this book. This is one of the best horror novels written in years. Full of strong characterisation, excellent descriptions and enough spine-chilling thrills to keep you up at night, Clegg delivers a terrific tale that is, at the same time, very different indeed.
The plot follows Stony Crawford and takes place now and...er...in the past.
Stony is a 15-year-old (in plot-line one) in love with a dark-haired beauty named Lourdes Maria Castillo. Their surprisingly deep romance unfolds against the backdrop of a peculiar small town called Stonehaven. But Stony is only being used as a pawn in a game that has been played since long before he was born.
12 years later (and in plot-line two), Stony returns to the town bringing with him a young boy he has just kidnapped from a religious compound in Texas.
With us so far? Okay. Clegg entwines the two narratives so that when the life of 15-year-old Stony climaxes, so does that of the 27-year-old Stony. Confused? Don't be. Reading the book is a delight...it's just too complex to explain in a review.
The focus of both stories is, naturally, Stony and the powerful being of "divine evil" - perhaps a demon, perhaps simply a creature like any other trapped within a summer mansion. Only Stony holds the secret to the dreaded Halloween Man, who has control of Stonehaven. But does Stony have the strength to be victorious in this ancient fight between good and evil?
Realistic, chilling thrills makes The Halloween Man another Clegg classic.
