Captivated by these two alluring sisters, Bodie finds himself drawn deep into a strange mystery that is fired by sex and haunted by blood.
But when mysterious invitations begin to arrive, announcing a party to be held there, nobody thinks it's a joke. After all, on Allhallow's Eve everyone wants to party in a house of death...
Bodies torn and chewed. Blood blackly-encrusting open wounds. Flaps of skin hanging loose, clawed from the stripped, ripped corpses. Men, women, children, slaughtered, mangled... The old woman who showed them round was well-practised in her grim, money-spinning take of the mysterious beast that has killed and killed again. Of course it was all in the past and all nonsense. Anyone would agree to that. Until, trapped, they heard, then smelled and felt the white, night-time creature that had come, grunting and spittle-slicked, for their bodies, their blood.
There's weird things happening in the town of Oasis and certain folks - like hotshot local reporter Lacey Allen - had better...BEWARE!
Sam doesn't believe in vampires but he does believe in the bite marks on Cat's body. And he knows he still loves her. The vampire visits at midnight. Cat waits for him, naked, on her bed. Sam is in the closet with a stake in his hand and a million questions in his mind. Are Cat's wounds self-inflicted? Is she insane? Or is she setting him up? Sam needn't worry much longer. He's about to find out the truth. It's almost midnight... For this year's reunion, Helen has picked The Totem Pole Lodge, a deserted hotel in the backwoods with a sinister past. She's looking forward to the moment when she'll tell the others the gory details. But that's before night falls and the girls find the Lodge is not as deserted as they thought. And before Helen goes into the shower. Alone.
Neal accepts the gift and revisits the scene of the shooting to check on the maniac who tried to kill Elise. But the maniac is not dead - he's alive and breathing vengeance. First he's going to finish the job on Elise, then he's going to butcher Neal. But this time Neal has the bracelet and, when he's not taking body rides with beautiful strangers, he's able to step inside his would-be killer's skull...
But the worst part of the house is actually beneath the haunted structure. There lies even a more terrifying presence waiting for its next victim. Don't even think about going into the cellar...
Simon Quirt sounds like a regular guy. Not the kind of fellow who would rape and murder in the dead of night. But, together with his friends, that's just what he does. Now Simon is alone. His friends, so called, have gone. They've left him to find the only eyewitnesses to their crime and dispose of them. He has to do it - or they'll slaughter his family. In any case, Simon has his own reasons for sticking around. He can't wait to get his hands on Jody...
FIENDS is the lead-off novella in this collection of horror stores by Richard
Laymon, "one of the best writers working in the genre today" - Cemetery
Dance "Laymon has established a style that has often been imitated but never equalled:
plunging, pull-out-the-stops, no-limits, in-your-face, shock-packed, take-off-the-top-of-your-head,
gonzo suspense and horror that will appal some people and exhilarate others...I
hope that you enjoy this collection of stories as much as I do" - from
the Introduction by Dean Koontz.
But the real horror is not what it looks like, or even what it does to
you when it burrows greedily into your flesh, but what it makes you do to
others...
But now Boleta Bay is fighting back. Convinced that the down-and-outs are
behind the abductions, a gang of local teenagers decide to wreak violent
revenge. Led by the charismatic Tanya, the gang graduate from simple beatings
to more sinister punishments. And as they grow more daring, their campaign
leads them to the old abandoned Funhouse, where the real truth of the disappearances
awaits them...
The Game requires more and more of Jane's strength and ingenuity. It destroys
her relationship with Brace Paxton, a professor at the local university.
It forces her, more than once, to defend her life. And it pushes her into
actions that she knows are crazy, immoral, criminal. Then a scene of horrible violence makes her realise that things have gone
too far. Jane wants to quit. But the Master of Games has other ideas...
Eight people take a yachting cruise in the Bahamas. They plan to swim,
sunbathe and relax - then the boat blows up. Though they're stranded on
a deserted island things could be worse: their beach camp location has fresh
water and fire wood, and there's enough food salvaged from the wreck to
last them out. Just one problem remains, as they wait to be rescued - they are not alone.
In the jungle behind the beach there's a manic on the loose with murder
in his heart. And he's plotting to kill them all, one by one...
Leigh is young, rebellious and beautiful - and she yearns for a summer
of excitement by the lake. Maybe she'll find it in the arms of the handsome
boy who rows her out to the abandoned beach house. Or maybe she'll stumble
into a legacy of terror which will shatter her life... Eighteen years on, Deana has no knowledge of her mother's troubled
past and not that much interest. She just wants to make out somewhere
cool with her boyfriend - to let her hair down and live a little. If
only living were that simple. But that summer at the lake casts a long
shadow. And when the horrors of the past meet the perils of the present,
both mother and daughter are plunged into a nightmare of blood and terror
from which there is no escape.
Now Tony has moved to Hollywood determined to break into horror movies.
His target is special-effects queen Dani Larson - he's willing to go to
any lengths to impress her. By now he's forgotten about Linda. But she's
a girl with vengeance in her heart - and she certainly hasn't forgotten
him...
The water drops like a shroud on the town of Bixby. Warm, viscous and
unnatural, it coats the inhabitants in an unending torrent - and turns
them into crazy, hate-filled maniacs. A helpful stranger at a gas station
shoves a petrol pump down a customer's throat and squeezes the trigger.
An entire cinema queue smashes its way inside the movie house to slice
up the dry people within. A loving wife hurls herself at her husband and
bounces his skull on the marble floor until it sounds like the back of
his head has turned into sloppy wet meat... The rain falls on customers as they enter Bixby's ritziest restaurant
- and hurl themselves on the diners within like a pack of starving wolves.
It falls on Maureen as she delivers pizza - she delivers a haymaking punch
with a rock in her fist instead. And as pretty Denise opens the door to
her boyfriend who has come to help her babysit, it falls on him too...
This was the horror-movie series to end them all. Cinema buffs particularly
admired the grainy, amateurish camera work - it suggested the action was
the real thing. But it couldn't be - could it?
One minute before the quake hits, Clint Banner is in his downtown office
ahead of the morning rush. So he's all alone as the walls buckle and the
carpet makes waves like the ocean. Outside, the buildings are dancing,
parked cars are rolling down the street and snapped power lines are crackling.
Clint's only concern is for the safety of his wife and daughter. He has
to get home - but how?? When the quake hits, Barbara Banner is in a car with a teacher and three
other students. The teacher freaks out and drives off like a maniac so
now she, too, is stranded on the wrong side of town. Clint and Barbara must make their way home to Sheila, trapped naked in
the bathtub in their ruined house. But will they get there before Stanley,
the fat pervert for whom the earthquake is a heaven-sent opportunity?
Years later Vicki still has nightmares about Melvin's "joke" and now
that she's back in Ellsworth, she knows she'll have to see him again.
Recently released from a mental institution, Melvin is acting stranger
than ever. His experiments with the dead have progressed and as soon as
he can get Vicki - or rather her body - where he wants her, he can realize
his most chilling dream of all...
This is just the start of the extraordinary adventures of Trevor Bentley,
a boy who embarked on an errand of mercy and ran into the most notorious
serial killer in criminal history, a boy who became a man as he travelled
on a quest of vengeance across a wild and untamed continent - a boy who
brought the horrors of Jack the Ripper to the New World.
So begins Larry Dunbar's new book and just for once it is a true story
- a frightening account of his own experiences. "Somebody hammered a pointed shaft of wood through the heart of a
woman. He left her inside a lidless coffin, and hid her corpse beneath
the stairway of an abandoned hotel in the town of Sagebrush Flat." Now Larry is personally involved in this ghoulish mystery and the evidence
is rotting in a coffin in his garage with a stake through its heart. For
once real life has the author by the throat, leading him inexorably to
the moment when he must put himself on the line. Was the woman in the
coffin an innocent victim of a callous murderer - or was she a vampire?
There's only one way for Larry to find out. He must summon all his courage
- and pull out the stake...
ALARUMS
Melanie Conway is a pale and lovely violinist who has strange visions of death. When she crashes to the floor during a concert her boyfriend, Bodie, is at hand to hear her fearful premonition of disaster...Penelope Conway is even more stunning than her sister but her looks frequently get her into trouble. Although she takes herself seriously as a writer, men only seem impressed by her beauty. The last thing she needs is a series of obscene phone calls...
ALLHALLOWS EVE
Nothing unusual ever happens in Ashburg until a local family are horribly mutilated and left to die in their own home. Since that night, the old Sherwood house has stood dark and abandoned - a constant reminder of the horrific killings.
AMARA (aka TO WAKE THE DEAD)
AMARA, Princess of Egypt, the once-beautiful wife of Mentuhotep the First,
lies in her coffin in the Charles Ward museum. Dead these 4000 years, now she's
just an inanimate bundle of withered skin and desiccated bone. Or is she?
When Barney the nightwatchman, discovers that the mummy's coffin has been
broken open, it seems grave-robbers are at work, out to steal valuable artefacts,
just as their kind have done for centuries. It's a pity Barney and the guards
can't tell the authorities how the mummy came to be missing. But the dead can't
testify to anything. Now Amara is free again, driven by an ancient need that
can only be assuaged at the cost of human life.
No one can oppose her, no bullet can stop her and nothing can kill her - for
she is dead already.

AMONG THE MISSING
At 2:32 a.m. a Jaguar roars along a lonely road high in the California mountains. Behind the wheel sits the beautiful wife of
Professor Grant Parkington. In spite of the night's chill, she wears only a thin, skimpy nightgown. She has left Grant behind.
She's after a different kind of man - someone as wild, daring and passionate as herself.
The man she wants is waiting for her in the woods. When he hears her car, he makes his way to the road and sticks out his
thumb. Mrs Parkington stops for him. "Where to?" she says.
He suggests the Bend, where the Silver River widens and there's a soft, sandy beach. With the stars overhead and moonlight on
the water, it's an ideal place for love.
But no love will take place there tonight. In the morning a naked body will be found at the Bend - a body missing more than its
clothes...

BAD NEWS (editor)
"Bad news, dude."
"I'm afraid I have some bad news for you."
"Watch out for that bastard - he's real bad news."
That's what this book is about...Bad News. Every story deals with characters who are bad news...or they're good people who encounter someone or something that is very bad news indeed.
And the bad news in these stories is just about as bad as it can get, because I chose authors who can deal it out mercilessly. They are hand-chosen by me. My own SWAT team of writers who aren't afraid to spill some blood...and other bodily fluids.
Bad News contains stories by eighteen of my favorite writers, a novella by myself, biographical sketches we all wrote about ourselves, plus an introduction that explains the origins of the book and tells how I became acquainted with each author whose work you'll find in these pages. Plus a stunning cover by Vince Natalie, and story illustrations by Glenn Chadbourne, Earl Geier, Keith Minnion and Gak.
(Published as a limited edition by Cemetery Dance in the US.)
BEAST HOUSE
The waxworks were so realistic.
BEWARE
The supermarket shouldn't have been shut - it wasn't normal for Elsie to quit early. But then it wasn't normal for a meat cleaver to fly through the air by itself. Or for a guard dog locked in overnight to end up like hamburger meat. Or for Elsie herself to feature on the butcher's slab, neatly wrapped and jointed...
BITE
Sam hasn't seen his first love, Cat, for ten years. But now she's back, asking for help - the kind of help she can only get from a man who'd do anything she asked. Like kill a vampire.
BLOOD GAMES
They meet up for one week every year: Helen, Cora, Vivian, Finley and Abilene - five former co-eds in search of thrills and adventure. Just like they enjoyed together at college. This time it's Helen's choice. Helen, the fat girl with a taste for horror, the brainy one with a fear of being caught alone in the shower by an unknown assailant with a sharp knife and a thirst for blood...
BODY RIDES
Returning a rented video one night Neal hears a scream. Ever since the LA riots he has carried a pistol in his car and now he shoots a man about to kill a young woman. The pair of them flee the scene and Elise insists on giving Neal a reward for saving her life. The reward is a bracelet in the shape of a coiled snake with emerald eyes - a magic bracelet that enables him to step inside other people, to see through their eyes and experience their feelings. To take "body rides".
THE CELLAR
Visitors flock to see the Beast House with its blood-soaked corridors and creaky doors. Armed with Instamatics and video camcorders, these poor souls enter the forbidden house, never to return. The deeper the tourists go into the house, the darker their nightmares become. The men are dealt with quickly. The women have to wait longer...first they are tortured and sexually ravished.

COME OUT TONIGHT
It's a hot, hot night. Too hot to be making love unless your romance is young, like Sherry and Duane's. It's their first time and the anticipation is
killing. There's just one problem - they have no condoms. Of course they could wait until tomorrow...
Duane remembers the twenty-four Speed-D-Mart. In the usual circumstances, it's not a place anyone would want to visit at night. But these aren't
usual circumstances. Duane throws on his clothes - the store is just ten minutes down the block.
Now Sherry is waiting. Ten minutes has gone, so has twenty. She's not worried - what's another few minutes? Then she hears the noise from down the street. It might be a door slamming. It might be the backfire of a car. But Sherry thinks it sounds mostly like a gunshot...

CUTS
In a suburb of Chicago, Albert Prince parks on a dark street thinking he's about to get lucky with Betty — only to find out she wants cash, not romance.
And Albert is a few bucks short.
"Dig up the rest of the money tomorrow," says Betty, "and give me a call. We'll have a great time tomorrow night."
But Albert won't be seeing Betty tomorrow night.
He'll be having a great time without her ... in a stranger's house ... with a beautiful woman with a knife.
DARK MOUNTAIN
Two families join forces for a camping holiday in the California mountains. It's meant to be fun - a break from city life, a healthy interlude in the hills amid the wonders of Nature. If only they hadn't pitched camp at Mesquite Lake, home to two of the wilderness's most terrifying inhabitants - an aged hag whose loyalty to the Evil One gives her gruesome powers, and her son, a depraved half-beast whose unnatural lusts even she connot control...
DARKNESS, TELL US
It starts at an end-of-term party. Six college kids and a Ouija board. The board that Professor Coreen Dalton had hidden at the back of a cupboard and sworn never to touch again - not after Jake's death. And now here are these kids falling for the revelations of a spirit called Butler, swallowing its promise of a fortune hidden in the mountains. Not that Corie believes they would be stupid enough to head off into the wilderness on the say-so of a child's plaything. To embark on a two-day hike into the unknown where any foul danger may lie in wait to cut and slice and tear them limb from limb. But then, professor or not, Corie could be wrong...

DREADFUL TALES (short story collection)
It's a hot summer night in West LA, a night when the fresh breeze from the ocean fails to cool those with no air conditioning. Shane Malone sits sweltering in front of his computer, thinking how easy it should be to write a contribution for an anthology; an anthology in which every chilling tale must end in the death of a twenty-two-year-old woman in her apartment.
Ideas swirl, but it has to be a grabber - Shane doesn't want to look like a slouch. And the deafening music blaring from next door is not helping.
Shane furiously bangs on the neighbour's door, ready to let rip. But Francine just happens to be a twenty-two-year-old woman who will not be argued with...and Shane is about to find out that life really can imitate art...
So begins the first tale in this terrifying collection of short stories - a delicious cornucopia of homicidal maniacs, vampires and lust-crazed teenagers - that showcase the macabre genius of Richard Laymon.
(Major short story collection released by Hodder Headline in the UK.)

FIENDS

house and raped her ten years ago. Now he's out of jail and back in town - and

he goes about it makes Marty sick. But when it comes to sick, there's no one

FLESH
No one in town has ever seen anything like it before: a slimy, mobile tube
of glistening yellow flesh, with dull staring eyes and an obscene, probing
mouth.

FUNLAND
The seaside resort of Boleta Bay is not the carefree place it used to be.
A series of unexpected disappearances has cast a dark shadow over summer pleasures.
And holiday-makers are being threatened by a growing army of leering, foul-mouthed
bums who have taken over the promenade.

THE GLORY BUS (aka INTO THE FIRE)
One moment Pamela is a newly-wed with a loving husband and a comfortable
home. The next, she's the prisoner of a killer who has lusted after
her since high school - and now intends to make her his slave. Norman
wouldn't say boo to a goose, so he's never going to throw bad-boy
Duke out of his car or say no to Boots, the hyper-sexed hitch-hiker
who tags along for the ride. Together the lawless pair take him on
a wild journey that looks like it's heading straight for the electric
chair. But when the glory bus comes along there's hope of salvation
for all. Pamela and Norman are just two who climb on board. They don't
know their destination is the furnace heat of the Mojave Desert, where
a special welcome awaits the weary traveller. It can't be worse than
what's gone before. Or can it?

HALLOWEEN MOUSE
This is a slight tale, suitable for all ages but of primary interest to kids, about the adventures of one Timothy Maywood Usher Mouse. Timothy lives in a public library and yearns for the sort of adventure he's read about in the books that surround him. One day he works up his courage and leaves his shelter through a window, only to encounter a snake (that he fools with a piece of candy corn), trick-or-treaters and a cat, which he escapes by taking refuge in a jack-o'-lantern that rolls into a local river. When last seen, Timothy is sailing to unknown shores, enjoying the world from his perch atop the jack-o'-lantern's nose.
IN THE DARK
Nothing much happens in Donnerville, at least not in the public library.
Then the new librarian, Jane Kerry, receives a strange envelope. Inside is
a fifty-dollar bill and a note instructing her to "Look homeward, angel."
Mystified, Jane pulls Thomas Wolfe's novel of that title off the shelf and
finds a second envelope. This one contains a one-hundred-dollar bill and a
clue to another pay-off. Like the first note it is signed "MOG (Master of
Games)" Suddenly Jane is hooked, this is one game she must play to the end
ISLAND
From the journal of Rupert Conway, castaway:
"Today the yacht exploded. Fortunately all of us had gone ashore to have a
picnic on this island, so we didn't get blown to smithereens. All of us, that
is, except Prince Wesley..."

THE LAKE
MIDNIGHT'S LAIR
Mordock's Cave is one of the wonders of the world: a place where thousands
of sightseers every year take an awe-inspiring boat trip on a lake deep beneath
the earth's surface and marvel at Nature's handiwork. But the darkness is
also the home of things Nature never intended - things violent, bestial and
obscenely evil. And when a sudden power failure traps a group of tourists
underground, the unnatural creatures who dwell there emerge from the depths...
THE MIDNIGHT TOUR
"The Beast House - legendary site of ghastly murder! See with your own
eyes where the bloody butchery took place! Witness authentic reproductions
of the Beast's ravaged victims in their actual death garments! Listen to the
true story of the only known survivor of the Beast!"
The sales pitch hasn't changed much over the years - except now you can listen
to it on earphones as you take the audio tour of the house. But the taped
tour only gives you a sanitized version of the horrific events that made the
Beast House infamous. If you want the full story, you'll have to take the
Midnight Tour. Saturday nights only. Limited to thirteen unlucky tourists.
It begins on the stroke of midnight.
Tonight the guide will show you every nook and cranny of the house. She'll
tell you everything - including details too ghastly and perverse to be mentioned
in daylight. But she might not be able to save you. Because this Saturday
night, those on the Midnight Tour will be joined by an unexpected visitor.
They'll be lucky to get out alive...
NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER
Ed Logan can't wait for his second year at Willmington University. It's
been a long summer without Holly, the girl he have his heart and soul to last
year. In turn, she fell in love with him - at least that's what she said.
In September, Ed returns to campus.
Holly doesn't.
On the first of October, Ed receives a letter.
"Dear Ed," it begins, "I will always cherish the times we had..."
Holly has fallen in love with someone else and won't be coming back.
Heartbroken, half mad with despair, Ed can't study, can't sleep.
So he leaves his apartment and takes a walk.
It's a scary night in the lonesome October and Ed is not alone. There are
oithers out there - roaming the streets, lurking under bridges, seeking prey.
Then he sees the mystery girl...
NIGHT SHOW
High-school prankster Tony Johnson has a weird idea of fun. He likes frightening
the life out of people. When he kidnaps school beauty Linda Allison and
locks her in a haunted house for the night, that's his idea of a joke. But
Linda doesn't see the funny side.

NO SANCTUARY
Rick would do anything for his girlfriend, Bert. He'd even spend his vacation
in the wilderness, walking the trails around Fern Lake - though after what
happened last time, it's the one place in the world he'd rather not go.
But Bert is a woman with a passion for the outdoors - and a passion for
other things too. With her cute blonde hair and curves where it counts,
she looks sensational in her hiking shorts. Rick would follow her to hell
and back - which is what's he's about to do...
Gillian is off on vacation too, only her idea of a holiday is a little weird.
She likes breaking into people's homes while they are away and just hanging
out, watching their TVs, lounging in their pools, sleeping in their beds.
It's how this beautiful rich girl gets her kicks. Pity that this time she
chances on the home of a serial-killer. The kind of guy who likes to take
his female victims out into the wilderness for his fun.
It turns out that Rick and Bert are not the only ones heading to Fern Lake...

ONCE UPON A HALLOWEEN
It's Halloween night. The old Witherspoon house stands all alone in the
dark, the last house on a dead-end street. Its only neighbors are thick
woods and a moonlit graveyard. Not long ago, a grisly murder/suicide took
place in the house. Now, it is said to be haunted.
Haunted but no longer abandoned. Three years ago, Laura and Shannon moved
in. They're young, pretty, friendly . . . and, best of all, generous with
candy on Halloween. Tonight, they're getting ready for a costume party.
Shannon is upstairs getting dressed and Laura is downstairs handing out
candy to trick-or-treaters.
It's a perfect Halloween night until Laura opens the door and finds herself
facing a lone teenaged boy . . . a terrified boy who says: "Let me in! They're
gonna get me!"
And, for Laura and Shannon, the party begins.
It's Halloween night and there are ghosts and goblins in the streets. And
something much worse in the graveyard.
ONE RAINY NIGHT
It begins with the kind of murder that men are accustomed to - and then
comes the rain and the kind of killing that none can understand.
OUT ARE THE LIGHTS
The Vampire movie came first - the girl died in a welter of blood as the
vampire bit clean through her jugular...The Inquisition came next - the
victim confessed all as the spider crawled over her naked body...Then came
the story of the Axeman...
QUAKE
Twenty minutes before the quake hits, Stanley is ogling a pretty female
jogger through his living-room window. He ogles Sheila Banner every morning
and that's not all he'd like to do to her. The quake might just give him
his chance.
RESURRECTION DREAMS
Melvin was definitely the biggest creep in Ellsworth High, and the other
kids mercilessly taunted him for his odd looks and weird behaviours. Vicki
was the only one to stand up for him but even she had to admit he'd gone
too far when he dug up a body and attempted to bring it back to life with
the aid of a car battery.
SAVAGE
Whitechapel, November 1988: Jack the Ripper is committing his last known
act of butchery in the one-room hovel occupied by the luckless harlot, Mary
Kelly. And beneath the bed on which the fiend is cruelly and cheerfully
eviscerating his victim cowers a fifteen-year-old-boy...
THE STAKE
"My name is Lawrence Dunbar. I am a writer of horror fiction..."

THE TRAVELLING VAMPIRE SHOW
It's a day like any other in the hot August of 1963. Sleepy little Grandville
holds few excitements for three thrill-seeking teenagers with time on their
hands. Except for the posters. They've appeared on the streets overnight
and for Dwight, Rusty and Slim the message is irresistible - The Travelling
Vampire Show is coming to town.
Not that getting in is going to be easy. For a start, the show's only for
over-18s and they can't pass for that. And the performance begins at midnight,
way past their parents' curfew. There's also the price of admission - ten
bucks each will take some finding.
But the whole day stretches ahead of them. What's to stop them taking off
for Janks Field, the spooky venue for the show, and watching the crew set
up? Maybe they can get some idea of what the performance will be like -
even catch a glimpse of 'gorgeous, stunning' Valeria, billed as 'the only
known vampire in captivity'. There can't be any harm in that - can there?
The Travelling Vampire Show is the story of what happens to Dwight, Rusty
and their tomboy pal Slim on the day they hike to Janks Field. Three teenagers
who go where they shouldn't go, do what they shouldn't do - and run into
big trouble…
